Why Battery Chargers and Standard Power Supplies Are Not Interchangeable
Using a dedicated battery charger as a standard power supply—or vice versa—can damage your electronics, ruin the battery, or create a fire hazard. They are designed for completely different electrical tasks.
1. Why a Battery Charger Cannot Power Normal 12V Devices
- Voltage Spikes: A dedicated battery charger labelled "12V" actually outputs voltages up to 14.4V or higher during its charging cycles to force energy into a battery.
- The Risk: If you plug a standard 12V device (like a router, LED strip, or mini-monitor) into a charger, this elevated voltage can instantly fry the device's delicate circuitry. A proper 12V power supply maintains a constant, regulated 12.0V.
2. Why a Standard 12V Power Supply Cannot Charge a 12V Battery
- Inadequate Voltage: To fully charge a 12V battery, the charging voltage must exceed the battery's fully charged resting voltage (around 12.6V to 12.8V). A constant 12.0V power supply will never successfully charge it.
- Overheating Danger: Standard power supplies lack the smart current-limiting circuitry found in battery chargers. If connected to a deeply discharged battery, the battery will attempt to draw maximum current. This forces the power supply to run at 100% capacity continuously, causing it to overheat, melt, or fail entirely.
